Preventing falls

Anyone can have a fall but your risk of falling increases as you age, or if you have mobility problems. You may also be at increased risk of falls if you have been diagnosed with a neurological disorder such as Parkinson's Disease or if you have experienced a stroke.

Top tips to reduce your risk of falls:

Do you have rugs or clutter that may cause a trip hazard? Would any adaptations such as an extra rail on the stairs or grab rails in the bathroom be helpful? The Centre for Independent Living can offer falls prevention advice, aids and adaptations.

Gentle exercise such as chair-based exercises can maintain your balance and strength and a number of classes are available across Knowsley via the IKAN team.

Being overweight or underweight can lead to different risks and complications related to falls. Contact the Healthy Knowsley Service for one to one support with improving your health and wellbeing.

Your balance can be affected by both hearing and sight loss. If you notice any changes to your hearing you should speak to your GP. An eye test is recommended at least every two years, speak to your local optician to arrange this.

Knowsley Falls and Fracture Prevention service carries out assessments for those who have fallen or may be at risk of falling. The service is available to anyone aged over 55 who lives in Knowsley or is registered with a Knowsley GP.
