Keeping safe near water

With the warm weather continuing, Knowsley Council is reminding residents of the dangers of water and how people can stay safe.

While it looks like fun to enter local rivers, lakes and open water, it is important to remember that even strong swimmers can get into trouble. Cold water shock, powerful currents and hidden hazards under the surface can catch people out very quickly, even on sunny days.

If you’re planning to spend time near water:

  • Think twice before jumping in. Cold water can seriously affect your breathing

  • Be aware of strong currents and things you can’t see under the surface

  • Always check for warning signs and follow safety advice

  • Never swim alone. Stay with friends and keep an eye on each other

In an emergency

If someone is in trouble in the water:

  • Call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service

  • Don’t jump in. Try to help from the side (for example, by reaching or throwing something they can hold onto)
